Downloading from the Internet

 Downloading

Let’s clarify a few things first.

  • Every time your browser goes to a web page, it actually downloads the HTML (or it’s cousins) and/or graphics to your computer.  Depending on how your computer is set up, it may also automatically download sounds, videos, and additional items where you have a special program for your browser called a plug-in (like Flash).  These items are stored in your temporary Internet files on your computer.
  • When people talk about downloading, though, they are generally referring to optional downloads of programs or documents.
  • You can get a virus from the installation of a download. To be safe, download only from reputable web sites or programs by developers you trust. Virus protection software is also a necessary added protection for your computer.  Keep your virus protection software current, and running!
  • Frequently, a download of a program is only the first step.  You must also run/install it.  Programs are often compressed using special software. If the developer didn’t include automatic installation in the programming, you may need UNcompression software to install it. The most popular by far is WinZip.

Hint: Create a folder on your desktop specifically for downloads. (RIGHT click on any unused area of your desktop, choose New, then Folder. Name it Downloads).  Put ALL your downloads in this one place.

Ready to download a program?

  • Program Download BoxClick on the download link.  This usually will open a dialog box.
  • Select Save this program to disk.  This will open a Windows navigation box.
  • Navigate to the the Downloads folder on your Desktop that you created (or other location).  You can create a new folder from this window if you wish - just be sure you open that folder once you create it before you click OK.
  • If you want to change the name of the download, you can do so, but do NOT change the file extension name (often .exe).
  • Save As Dialog BoxWhen you are ready, click OK. The download should begin. You may want to stop Internet use to allow the download to progress quickly.
  • When the download is done, you may then open the Downloads folder (or other location), and double click on the program to install it.  If it is a Zip file, you will need to use the WinZip program to uncompress it before installation.
  • Most program downloads recommend you save any work and close any other programs before installation.  Current installation procedures are fairly helpful - you can probably accept the default settings of each window in the installation procedure. At least skim each window, though, to be sure the installation is proceeding as you wish.
  • You may be required to restart your computer when installation is complete.

Still have problems? Send an e-mail to the download site, and ask for help.

Special Notes: Sometimes the files you download get corrupted in the transfer between computers. Often you can just re-download the same program and it will transfer correctly.

In most cases, software developers in the US are not responsible for any damage done to your computer as a result of the download or use of the software. Be careful, but don’t let this stop you from downloading from the Internet!
