Web Directories, or Web Indexes list web sites that have been selected by employees or volunteers (referred to as guides) and placed into topic
categories. The search results in a Directory will often have the sites ranked by popularity or by quality as determined by the guide.
There has been an increase in Web Directories where rankings are shown in the order of how much the owner of the web site has been willing to pay for the listing. Some of the problems with Web Directories are:
- Because the sites are generally selected by people, their opinion of a site may influence the results you see.
- Directories won’t be nearly as complete as Search Engines that use software to spider most of the Internet for related results
